#92: How do You Balance All of It?

*A couple of weeks ago, I spoke to three classes of sales students at the University of Cincinnati, and they had some really great questions. REALLY great questions...and a lot of them. So I thought it would be good to share them, and my answers, with you, gentle reader.*

With everything going on in your life, how do you maintain balance and do it all?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Okay, I feel better now. That question always makes me laugh, because "balanced" is the furthest thing from how feel on a daily basis, and I certainly don't do it all. And this is where I get on my soapbox.

Women are told that if they just HUSTLE hard enough, they can have it all— the perfect balance of a thriving career and a side hustle, a hot relationship with their partner, healthy kids, a rockin' body, great friendships, a calm and friendly demeanor, perfectly tousled hair, an unlined forehead, a book deal, contoured cheekbones, thousands of social media followers, a beautifully kept house, and on and on and on.

THIS IS BULLSHIT. IT IS SO MUCH BULLSHIT THAT IT MAKES ME WANT TO SCREAM.

I'm here to tell you right now that you cannot "have it all" all at once. Not gonna happen. And if you do have all those things, you also have a TON OF HELP. Nannies and trainers and personal assistants and a chef and a housekeeper and botox on demand and etc. None of which I have. So I (and you) have to make choices. Sometimes, you are going to move something to the front of the line. For me right now, that's business. My sparkling clean house, perfectly tousled hair and chiseled abs will just have to wait. It is incredibly damaging to think that everyone else has this all figured out, and that if you can't do all those things and be chill about all of it, that you are doing it wrong.

So that's what balance means to me—figuring out what is really important to me at that time and intentionally focusing on that while knowing that the rest of it is just going to have to wait until a different season in my life. (Except for perfectly tousled hair. That is never gonna happen.)
